Located at the Smithsonian since 1995, the Jerome and Dorothy Lemelson Center explores the role of invention and innovation in history and contemporary culture. Upswell engaged the Lemelson team and this rich archive through detailed content strategy and user experience work sessions, arriving at the principles and messaging frameworks that would guide the creation of the site.

Using the metaphor of “a magazine of culture and ideas” as the guiding concept for the user experience design, we conceived of a flat, vertical structure that facilitates both user access to stories and staff curation of new stories. We also designed the content management system to align with internal editorial workflows. In this way, our strategy and execution transformed and supported the center’s organizational needs for a transformative publishing platform.

A friendly, clever publishing platform for a digital archive of American innovations and inventions.
