Racial Segregation

Exhibit about Viola Desmond.

This film-centric niche tells the story of Viola Desmond, a Canadian woman who challenged public racism by sitting in the “whites only” section of a segregated movie theatre. Upswell’s software allowed the English and French language films to be shown in immediate succession, with a countdown displaying when the alternate language would play again. The video player also enabled closed captioning and sign language interpretation to be present onscreen.
